February until end of school year swimming on a class rota basis.

Topics being covered for the Autumn Term:

  • Mountains (Geography)
  • Romeo & Juliet (English)
  • Healthy Eating (Design & Technology)

Homework
2.5 hours per week

Activities: reading spelling, other Literacy and Numeracy work or possible work connected with the topic being studied.
The precise amount of time spent on homework is much less important than the quality of tasks set and the way they are planned to support learning.  Homework tasks will be planned for different areas of the curriculum, particularly literacy and Numeracy.
Homework will not, in general be used to finish off work started in class.

Spelling Help
Words which we use in our language many times are known as high frequency words.
Strategies are essential for practising high frequency words, most of which contain awkward, irregular letter patterns.
See separate sheets for help with different strategies.
The words can then be practised using
-READ, LOOK, COVER, WRITE, CHECK-

High Frequency Words
See class sheet
These may appear to be very basic for a year 6 child, but they are the words your child will use most frequently in his/her own writing and so it is important that all children have a secure grasp of the spelling of these.

Clothing

Clothing should be clearly labelled and easily identified.
All personal items brought into school must be clearly labelled and contained in a small bag as cloakroom space is very limited.

PE Kit
Shorts and a T shirt
Friday afternoon ? football boots or trainers which may get muddy.  In winter warm clothes eg jogging bottoms and sweat top. All kit must be clearly labelled with the child?s name.

Additional notes for Class 4

Class rules and behaviour.
The three basic rules of my classroom are:

  1. Respect your self and always try your best in all that you do
  2. Respect others at all times during the day
  3. Respect properties of the school and others

These are expected to be followed by all pupils throughout the day.  All other classroom expectations and procedures stem from these three important ideas.

I believe each child should take responsibility for his or her own behaviour.  By Year 6 they should not be offering excuses and blaming others.  Therefore the children will be made aware of my rules and expectations from day one.  After that my rules are non-negotiable and pupils will receive immediate sanctions as opposed to a warning.  These consequences will vary at my discretion but I will ensure that they are reasonable, logical and consistent.

Homework

  • Homework will be set on Fridays and will be due in the following Thursday.  Smaller ?finishing off? activities may be set every now and then in between this and the deadline for this will be negotiated at the time.
  • The amount of homework will vary depending upon the work being undertaken by the class.  No homework will be set during the holidays as I believe children need time to relax and enjoy a break from school.
  • I expect children to be reading at home for their own pleasure.  But I also ask as part of their homework that they read to an adult once a week and that this adult signs their Reading Diary as a formal record of this.  I will collect in all Reading Diaries on Friday so it is important that your child has his/her signed Diary with them on this day.
  • This year I am also asking that you sign your child?s Homework Diary each week as an acknowledgement that you have seen what homework your child has been set.
  • If your child experiences difficulties with homework when working with you at home please let me know by writing a note in your child?s Homework Diary and I will do my best to ensure any problems are overcome before the due day.

PE
The children in my class will have PE on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  When scheduled to do outdoor PE the sessions will go ahead outdoors unless it is not safe to do so.  Therefore your child will need adequate outdoor clothing.  Boys Football Club will take place on a Tuesday at lunchtime.  Girls Football Club on Wednesday Lunch and any squad practice will take place on a Thursday Lunch.  In order to do football children will need a set of shinpads (as we only have a limited supply at school ) and a pair of football boots as the ground gets softer.

My availability
Due to the busy nature of teaching Year 6 and my active involvement in school sport I would appreciate that if you have any problems requiring my attention that you make an appointment convenient to us both enabling me to give the matter my full attention.  Obviously if a matter requires my immediate attention that day, I can easily be contacted via letter through the school office.

Multiplication Facts
Already this term I have become aware that many children within the class are unable to correctly recall their Multiplication facts.  It would be a great help to me if you could support your child in learning these at home.  Although I teach this as part of the Numeracy Hour it is impossible for me to teach it every day.  It is this daily practice that I am certain, many of the children benefit from.  To help you the Multiplication Facts can be found in the centre of your child?s Homework Diary.
